How to permanently delete files in Windows 10 and 11

Removing a confidential document takes more than making its icon disappear. First check where its copies are stored and what kind of drive holds the file.

Erasing selected files requires a method suited to the storage device. Emptying the Recycle Bin or pressing Shift + Delete does not confirm that the contents have been erased. Individual file erasure on SSDs and NVMe drives has additional limits.

Are you deleting files or handing over a computer?

Removing a few documents after a project is different from preparing a laptop for sale. In the first case, you want to keep Windows and the rest of your files. In the second, you need to account for all data on the device, including accounts, copies and application traces.

Does Shift + Delete permanently erase a file?

Shift + Delete normally skips the Recycle Bin. It is not a command to overwrite file contents. After emptying the bin, the chances of recovery still depend on the drive and subsequent activity. Read our explanation of what happens when you empty the Recycle Bin.

Why do HDDs and SSDs need different approaches?

On an HDD, software can overwrite the logical storage areas occupied by a file. On an SSD, the controller decides where data is physically written. Writing to the same logical address again does not necessarily overwrite the same memory cell.

TRIM tells a drive which blocks are no longer needed. It does not give you confirmation that every physical copy has already been cleared. NVMe describes how a device communicates with the computer; many NVMe drives are SSDs. Adding overwrite passes does not remove the limitations of flash storage.

How do you prepare files and run an erasure?

  1. Check the scope. Select specific documents or a folder. Keep anything you still need elsewhere, and close applications using the files.
  2. Look for other copies. A document may also exist in email, OneDrive, version history or backups. One local operation does not automatically remove all these copies.
  3. Read the plan and warnings. The software should explain how it will perform the operation and what it cannot confirm on that drive.
  4. Review the list before starting. A file disappearing from Explorer is not a substitute for the application's operation result.
  5. Read the result. Check skipped files, access errors and interrupted work. If you need documentation, keep the report and the explanation of the method's limits.
